NORMAL, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan University improved to 5-2 on the season with a 4-1 and 9-3 doubleheader sweep over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in college baseball action on Sunday afternoon.
Rose-Hulman brought the tying run to the plate in the final inning in the opener before falling 4-1 in the opener.
Illinois Wesleyan built a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second, one in the fourth and one in the sixth inning, before Rose-Hulman put together its best rally of the day in the seventh and final frame. With two outs, Evan Witsken slapped a single and pinch hitter Zach Hull doubled.
Pinch hitter Cody Sunderhaus put Rose-Hulman on the board with a single, before Josh Jimenez of Illinois Wesleyan ended the contest with a strikeout.
Jiminez improved to 1-1 on the season with 11 strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game. Gino Cavaleri led the Titans offense with two hits and two RBIs.
Witsken led the Rose-Hulman offense with two singles. Senior R.J. Carroll took the loss on the mound, allowing just two earned runs in a complete game. Carroll scattered seven hits and struck out six in the performance.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman led 3-1 early in the contest, before Illinois Wesleyan rallied to capture a 4-3 edge after six innings. Pat Mollo had the big blast of the day, a grand slam in the seventh inning, to give the Titans their margin of victory.
Patrick Klima led the Fightin' Engineer offense with two singles and two runs scored. Hull scored one run and four players had one single each. Joey Callahan started on the mound and allowed just two earned in 4.2 innings of work with three strikeouts.
Illinois Wesleyan improved to 5-2 on the season, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 5-5 overall. The Fightin' Engineers host Defiance College in a three-game series at Art Nehf Field on Friday and Saturday.
