CLERMONT, Fla. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team opened its 2015 season on a positive note winning two games 6-3 over St. Vincent (Penn.) and Wesleyan (Ga.) on Monday, March 2.
In the game with St. Vincent, Rose-Hulman trailed 2-0 going into the seventh inning, but rallied to scored six runs in the final inning for the victory.
The Bearcats (2-1) used a Fightin' Engineer error to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore Janel Lake led off the inning with a double to right center field. After a walk, sophomore Jett Bender singled down the left field line to load the bases.
Freshmen Jessica Will and Gabbi Markison long with junior Marissa Stout all reached base, giving Rose-Hulman a 3-2 lead. Freshman Jenny Miller then delivered a three-run home run that sealed an Engineer victory.
Will led Rose-Hulman offensively going 3-3 in her first collegiate game. Miller finished 2-3 with three runs batted in. Freshman Maria Schaefer also had two hits.
Stout picked up the victory scattering seven hits over seven innings with four strikeouts with one earned run.
In the victory over Welseyan, the Engineers tacked on a single run in both the first and second innings. Wesleyan (3-7) responded with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game.
With the score tied 3-3 an inning later, Rose-Hulman broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Markison led off the inning with a home run to left field. After a double from Stout, Miller doubled down the left field line to put Rose-Hulman up 5-3. Lake then singled in Stout for the game's final run.
Junior Taylor Lockhart earned the victory allowing three earned runs and seven hits while striking out five in seven innings of work.
Individually, Will, Markison, and Bender all notched two hits.
Sitting at 2-0, the Engineers return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, March 3). Rose-Hulman is scheduled to play Susquenhanna (Penn.) at 1 p.m. following by Adrian (Mich.) at 3 p.m.
