TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team improved to 9-3 on the season with a sweep of a doubleheader against Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) 7-0 and 11-0 in five innings on Saturday, March 21.
In game one, neither team scored in the first five innings. The Rose-Hulman bats, however, came alive in the bottom of the sixth. In total, the Fightin' Engineers drew six walks, recorded four hits, and used one MSOE error to plate all seven runs. The Raiders had their first two batters reach base in the top of the seventh, but junior Marissa Stout forced a double play followed by a strikeout to earn her fifth victory of the season.
Stout pitched a complete game shutout allowing just five hits and zero walks while striking out three in seven innings of work.
Freshman Gabbi Markison led the way offensively going 2-2 with two RBI and two walks in game one. Freshman Jessica Will, senior Carly Heibel, and junior Jett Bender all recorded a single hit with Bender also adding two RBI. Freshman Jenny Miller did not have an official at bat, but set a school record by reaching base all four plate appearances via the base on balls.
In game two, the Rose-Hulman bats remained hot as the Engineers scored six runs on six hits in the first inning of game two. The Engineers put the game away in the third inning as Heibel smashed her 15th career home run as Rose-Hulman plated five more runs in the inning.
Junior Taylor Lockhart improved to 4-1 on the season allowing two hits and striking out two batters in five innings of work.
As a team, Rose-Hulman tallied 12 hits with Miller, Bender, Will, and senior Jess Ahlborn tallying two hits each. Sophomore Janel Lake led the squad with two RBI in game two.
Rose-Hulman (9-3) enters Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play next Saturday, March 28 with a home double header against Defiance. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
