Ellie Hong Earns All-American Honors in 200 Back

SHENANDOAH, TEXAS -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Ellie Hong earned her second career All-American award with a eighth place finish in the 200-yard backstroke at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving National Championships on Saturday night at Conroe Natatorium.

Hong completed the 200-backstroke in a time of 2:01.64 for her second All-American award in the last two years in the same event.  She placed seventh in the event last year and also earned honorable mention All-American honors with a 14th-place finish in the 100-backstroke on Friday.  Her preliminary time of 56.41 seconds in the 100-backstroke earlier this week also stands as a new school record.

Hong becomes just the fourth Fightin' Engineer swimmer in school history to earn multiple All-American honors.  Teammate Orion Martin earned his second career All-American award with a sixth-place finish in the 100-butterfly earlier this week (SEE RELATED STORY).  Matt Smith earned four All-American awards, including a 100-breaststroke national championship in 2003.  Sean Valentine also earned a pair of All-American awards at the 1999 NCAA Division III National Championships.

Hong also competed in the 50-freestyle at the NCAA Division III National Championships on Wednesday with a time of 24.50 seconds.

The mechanical engineering major continues an outstanding career that includes two All-American awards, one honorable mention All-American award, and five all-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin honors.
