CLERMONT, Fla. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team hit four home runs on the day and earned two victories, 8-4 over Finlandia (Mich.) and 7-5 over Otterbein (Ohio) on Wednesday, March 4.
In the game against Finlandia, the Fightin' Engineers fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but a three-run home run from freshman Jenny Miller gave Rose-Hulman a 3-2 lead. Finlandia would regain the lead 4-3 with two more runs in the top half of the second inning.
The Engineers battled back to tie the contest 4-4 in the fourth when junior Jett Bender scored on an RBI-double from freshman Jessica Will. Rose-Hulman put the game away with two runs in each of the final two innings fueled by home runs from Miller (second of the game) and junior Marissa Stout.
Miller tied the school record smashing two home runs in the contest which plated five of the eight Rose-Hulman runs. Five Engineers tallied multiple hits in the game.
Junior Taylor Lockhart picked up her second victory of the season pitching the final three innings for the Engineers. The Robinson, Ill., native allowed just one hit and struck out two over that span. Freshman Michelle Korf pitched the first four innings.
In the game with Otterbein, the Engineers again struck early as senior Carly Heibel blasted a three-run home run to right center field. The Cardinals scored the game's next four runs to take a 4-3 advantage.
Rose-Hulman regained a 5-4 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Otterbein tied the game once more with a single through the left side. The Engineers would have the last laugh, however, plating two runs in the seventh using a single from sophomore Ellissa Eckert and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Janel Lake.
Stout took the victory pitching the final three innings allowing three hits. Heibel, Stout, sophomore Morgan Dreyer, and freshman Gabbi Markison all produced multi-hit performances.
