Baseball Team Caps Florida Trip with 10-Inning Win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology completed its annual Florida Spring baseball trip with a 4-2 record, after defeating Fitchburg State 6-5 in 10 innings on Saturday morning.

Fitchburg State scored twice in the seventh inning to knot the score at 5-5.  The score stayed the same until the bottom of the 10th, when Rose-Hulman put together a rally for the game winning run.  Patrick Klima opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Caleb Kissel.  Junior Zach Trusk then smashed the game winning single to left field, scoring Klima with the walk-off run.

Kissel led Rose-Hulman's offensive attack with four of the team's 11 hits.  He finished 4-4 with four singles, one run scored and one RBI on the day.

Junior Kody Alayon added two singles and scored once, and sophomore Cody Sunderhaus also had two singles, one run and one RBI.  Klima added a double, walked three times, scored twice and had one RBI.

The 10th inning rally made a winner out of senior pitcher R.J. Carroll, who improved to 1-0 on the season.  Carroll tossed three shutout innings, allowing just two hits and no runs.  Junior Karson Nixon kept the Fightin' Engineers within striking range with six strong innings, allowing just two earned runs with six strikeouts.

Rose-Hulman improved to 4-2 on the season with the victory.  The Fightin' Engineers are scheduled to open the home season on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Greenville (weather and field conditions permitting).
