LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored twice in its last at-bat to earn a 5-4 victory in the nightcap and earn a split of one-run softball games at Spalding University on Sunday.
The host Golden Eagles won the opener 1-0 behind a pitching gem, before Rose-Hulman's final at-bat rally caused a split of the day's action.
Sophomore Janel Lake had the biggest hit of the day to snap a 4-4 tie with a single to score senior Carly Heibel with the game winning run. Freshman Jenny Miller and Heibel started the seventh inning rally with back-to-back doubles to tie the score, before Lake's RBI single proved the difference.
Offensively, Miller smashed four hits in the nightcap and Heibel had three to lead the Rose-Hulman offense. Miller was 4-4 with a double, one run and one RBI, while Heibel was 3-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Senior Jessica Ahlborn also had a multiple-hit game with two singles and one RBI.
Other key offensive contributors included junior Marissa Stout with two runs scored and a single; Lake with the RBI single; and freshman Jessica Will with one hit and one run scored.
The rally made a pitching winner of Heibel, who came on in relief in the second inning. Heibel scattered five hits and allowed no runs with one strikeout to move to 2-1 on the season.
In the opener, Miller led the Rose-Hulman offense with the lone hit, a double off the outfield wall. Miller also tossed a complete-game five-hitter with one strikeout to keep the Fightin' Engineers within striking distance.
Kelci Flener threw a pitching gem with 14 strikeouts, one hit allowed and two strikeouts for the Golden Eagles in game one. Amanda Gilliland snapped the scoreless tie with a sixth inning RBI single.
Rose-Hulman stands 15-7 on the season, while Spalding has a mark of 9-15. The Fightin' Engineers return home for a Tuesday doubleheader against Franklin College at 5 p.m.
