TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings en route to a 12-7 victory over DePauw University at Art Nehf Field on Thursday.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Fightin' Engineers got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on RBI hits from juniors Zach Hull and Hazen Hamather. Rose-Hulman tacked on two more runs in both the third and the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead into the fifth.
DePauw (11-16) woke up its bats in the fifth inning. The Tigers tallied four runs on three hits and one Rose-Hulman error to cut the Engineers' lead to 6-4.
Rose-Hulman (15-12) showed good patience at the plate in the home half of the fifth inning, drawing four walks and tallying two hits to score six runs and put the game out of reach. From the sixth inning on, the Engineer bullpen allowed two runs on five hits.
In total, the Engineers pounded 13 hits while DePauw had ten hits. DePauw committed two errors while Rose-Hulman had three.
Freshman Joey Callahan evened his record to 3-3 on the season allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out three in 4.1 innings of work. DePauw's Jonathan Azar took the look.
Individually, Hamather finished 3-5 with an RBI. Junior Caleb Kissel went 2-5 with three RBI and a walk. Hull was the other Engineer to finish with two hits.
Rose-Hulman returns to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a three-game series at Earlham this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
