TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Fightin' Engineer men's track and field team earned first-place honors, while the women finished second at the 11-team Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Twilight Meet on Friday night at the William Welch Track and Field Complex.
The men's and women's squads combined for four event wins, two school records and 27 top-three finishes in a strong teamwide performance. Rose-Hulman's evening was highlighted by 1-2-3 sweeps in the men's javelin throw and the women's triple jump.
Freshman Gabi Razma led Rose-Hulman's two event winners with a school record mark of 36' 3" in the women's triple jump. The effort marked Razma's second school record performance in the event this spring.
Senior Blake Schulthies added the second win of the evening with a javelin throw of 170' 1". The performance led a men's sweep of the top three positions in the event.
The Fightin' Engineers capped the night by sweeping the men's and women's 4-x-400 meter relay events. The men's squad featured Josh Hennig, Isaiah Smith, Brendan Smyth and Blake Schulthies in a time of 3:20.53 in an event that secured the team win. Rose-Hulman scored 198.5 points to outscore Washington University at 192.
On the women's side, Rose-Hulman topped its previous school record by four seconds to secure a first-place finish and a second-place team placement. Christine Harper, Razma, Victoria Heckenlively and Addie Johnson finished in a record breaking time of 4:00.70.
The men's squad recorded eight runner-up finishes to finish second overall in the team scoring. Running event second-place finishers included Hennig in the 400 meters (49.96), junior Sam Sobczak in the 3,000 meters (8:52.63), and the 4-x-100 meter relay team of Adam Wilson, Philip Koranteng, Smith and Brayden Betz with a time of 42.68 seconds. The 4-x-100 meter relay mark stands fifth in school history.
Field event runner-up finishers included sophomore Josh Blome in the pole vault (14' 10 3/4"); sophomore Andrew Okruch in the discus throw (157' 7"); senior Zac Erba in the hammer throw (167' 10"); senior Austin Schulthies in the javelin throw (164' 1"); senior Vashon Solomon in the triple jump (42' 10 1/4"); sophomore Charles Spaeth in the shot put (51' 9 3/4"). The shot put mark by Spaeth also ranks second in Rose-Hulman history.
On the women's side, Rose-Hulman combined for four second-place finishes. Runner-up performances included freshman Lindsey Fagerberg in the triple jump (34' 7"); sophomore Ava Paruleski in the high jump (5' 1 1/4"); Razma in the long jump (16' 8 1/2"); and senior Anna Taylor in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:59.05).
Smyth led Rose-Hulman's third-place finishers with two performances in the triple jump (42' 9 3/4") and the 400-meter hurdles (57.00). Other men's third-place finishers included Erba in the javelin throw (159' 4"); Okruch in the shot put (48' 6 3/4"); and Charles Statler in the 3,000-steeplechase (10:35.39).
On the women's side, third-place finishers included Sheldan Falls in the triple jump (34' 0"); Harper in the long jump (15' 9"); Mallory McDevitt in the pole vault (10' 2"); Paruleski in the javelin throw (104' 3"); and Jaclyn Setina in the high jump (5' 1 1/4"). McDevitt moved into second on Rose-Hulman's all-time list with her pole vault mark.
In addition, Johnson moved into second place on Rose-Hulman's 400-meter dash list on the women's side to lead the fourth-place finishers. She recorded a time of 59.38 seconds.
Rose-Hulman returns to action at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Transylvania University on April 24-25.
