TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's tennis team clinched the program's first ever outright Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) regular season championship with an 8-1 victory over Transylvania University on Saturday, April 25.
The Fightin' Engineers finish the conference season with an unblemished 8-0 record. Additionally, Rose-Hulman dropped only four flights the entire HCAC season, falling at six singles to Franklin and Transylvania and dropping first singles and first doubles against Earlham.
Rose-Hulman (11-5, 8-0 HCAC) won all three doubles flights. Sophomores Brandon Benedict and Georges Adam improved to 9-5 on the season with an 8-1 victory over Robert Albrecht and Zachary Meikle at first doubles. Junior Matt Conrad and freshman Cam Metzger came from a break down to win second doubles 9-7 while freshmen Tyler Haas and Derek Benedict won their third doubles match 8-6.
In singles, Brandon Benedict won his ninth match of the season at first singles, defeating Albrecht 6-0, 6-2. Metzger and Derek Benedict each won their 12th singles matches of the year playing primarily third and fifth singles respectively. Adam and Conrad also won their second and fourth singles matches.
The lone match point for Transylvania came at sixth singles as Luke Groene defeated Tyler Haas 6-3, 7-6(3).
The Fightin' Engineers will seek their first trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament during the HCAC Tournament on May 2-3 at West Indy Racquet Club.
