TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team ended its season splitting a doubleheader with Mount St. Joseph on Monday evening. The Fightin' Engineers fell 4-3 in eight innings in game one and won game two 6-2.
In game one, Mount St. Joseph (19-13, 7-9 HCAC) scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Fightin' Engineers scored a run in the fifth when senior Carly Heibel reached base via an error. An inning late, freshman Jessica Will singled to right field scoring fellow freshman Michelle Korf.
With the international tiebreak in effect, a runner was placed at second base to begin the eighth inning. The Lions scored two runs on two hits in the top of the frame. In the home half of the inning, Rose-Hulman got within a run on Korf's sacrifice fly to center field. The Engineers would get the tying run to second base, but a flyout to left ended game one.
Junior Taylor Lockhart took the loss allowing one earned run and striking out three in eight inning of work. Will, Markison, and Korf all had two hits while junior Marissa Stout and freshman Janel Lake each added one hit.
In game two, Rose-Hulman scored two runs in the first inning from its seniors. Heibel singled to center field plating one run and Jessica Ahlborn drew a base on balls with the bases loaded. The Lions responded, however, with two runs on four hits in the third to tie the game 2-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Rose-Hulman's patience at the plate paid off. The Engineers drew three walks and were hit by two pitches en route to scoring two runs in the fifth. Stout increased the Engineer lead to 6-2 with her fourth home run of the season.
Heibel improved to 6-1 with the victory on the mound, allowing seven hits while striking out two in her final collegiate game. Heibel also went 1-2 with an RBI from the batters box.
As a team, the Engineers totaled five hits and drew five walks.
Rose-Hulman ends its 2015 campaign with a 21-13 record overall and a 7-9 mark in HCAC play.
