TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Transylvania University scored runs in the first four innings to earn a 7-4 victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball series opener on Friday night at Art Nehf Field.
Trey Simpson led the Transylvania offense with four singles. Hunter Voshell and Nick Edwards added two hits and one RBI, and Connor Blevins had a solo home run for the Pioneers.
The Rose-Hulman offense featured four players with multiple hits. Sophomore Drew Schnitz led the effort with three hits, including a triple. Junior Caleb Kissel had two singles and scored once, junior Hazen Hamather added two singles and two RBIs, and sophomore Zach Trusk contributed two singles and one run scored.
Braden Johnson picked up the win for Transylvania by scattering 10 hits and allowing three runs to move to 2-0 on the season. Bryce Crader and Adam Boone held the Engineers scoreless for the final three innings to secure the win.
Rose-Hulman dropped to 10-9 on the season and 5-4 in conference play, while Transylvania improved to 7-13 and 4-6. The Fightin' Engineers and Pioneers conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
