TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Blake Schulthies completed a national caliber decathlon performance with one school record at the Ohio Wesleyan Ron Althoff Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
Schulthies narrowly missed one of the longest standing records in school history with a score of 6,756 points over the 10 events at Ohio Wesleyan. Tony Allen set the school record mark of 6,759 points in 1978.
Schulthies did snap one school record among his 10-event effort. His 100-meter dash mark of 10.92 seconds broke the mark previously set by Arvont Hill in 1997. He scored 878 points for that mark and also crossed the 800-point mark (821) with a time of 15.24 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Schulthies other top scoring marks were 804 points for a 400-meter dash time of 50.23 seconds, and 796 points for a pole vault leap of 15' 1 3/4". His overall score of 6,756 points currently ranks No. 4 in NCAA Division III this season.
Rose-Hulman will send individuals to the North Central Invitational on Friday. The NCAA Division III National Championships will take place May 21-23 at St. Lawrence University.
