CANTON, N.Y. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Blake Schulthies earned the 50th All-American award in the history of the Fightin' Engineer men's and women's track and field program with a seventh-place finish at the decathlon at the 2015 NCAA Division III National Championships at St. Lawrence University.

Schulthies scored 6,686 total points to place seventh and cap his collegiate track and field career with his first All-American award.  He joins Tony Allen (1978) as the only decathletes in Rose-Hulman history to earn All-American honors.

Schulthies won two events against the top 20 decathletes in NCAA Division III to propel his seventh-place overall finish.  He won the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.25 seconds and captured first place honors in the pole vault with a leap of 14' 9".

"It was a short season in the decathlon, but it was very rewarding.  My most confident events were the 400 and the pole vault because I've run them all year long.  The confidence I gained in those two events really pushed me through these 10 challenges," said Schulthies.

Schulthies also recorded top-five finishes in the 100-meter dash (4th in 11.03 seconds) and in the 110-hurdles (5th in 15.32 seconds).

"What an accomplishment to run his first two decathlons in a 10-day span.  Blake's first decathlon qualified him for the National Championships and then he became an All-American.  He performed well today, and I'm very proud of him," said head coach Larry Cole

His other event marks were recorded in the javelin (149' 9"), discus (118' 2"), shot put (39' 10 1/2"), long jump (19' 11), high jump (5' 7") and 1,500-meter run (5:03.34).

"This is the culmination of Blake's efforts and wouldn't have happened without the help of our entire coaching staff.  Our coaches worked individually with Blake in sprints, jumping events, throwing events and put him in the position to perform at a national level," said Cole.

The award marks the 50th All-American honor in the history of Rose-Hulman track and field, with a tradition highlighted by 10 individual national championship performances.
