BEREA, Ohio -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 2:45 to take the lead in the final minute, before falling 80-79 to Medaille College in the Baldwin Wallace Holiday Invitational on Thursday night.
Rose-Hulman trailed 78-71 with 2:45 left after a layup by Medaille's Sean Wilson. Senior Collin Wojcik hit four free throws in the next two possessions to bring Rose-Hulman within 78-75 at the 1:36 mark.
Freshman Ryuji Aoki then recorded a steal and hit two free throws to bring the Engineers within 78-77 at the 1:22 mark. Following another Medaille turnover, sophomore Charlie Aimone scored from the left baseline to put Rose-Hulman in front 79-78.
Justin Fagan knocked down two free throws for Medaille with 43 seconds remaining to put the Mavericks ahead 80-79. The Fightin' Engineers had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but a 20-footer by Aoki came up short.
Aimone led Rose-Hulman with 20 points on 9-13 from the field with six rebounds. Aoki and Wojcik came off the bench with 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Stephen Schueth also reached double figures for the Fightin' Engineers with 12 points.
The balanced Rose-Hulman attack also included freshman John Czarnecki and sophomore Nick McGrail with eight points each.
Meghale Ford led Medaille with 20 points. Mike Hollenbeck scored 14 points, and Johnathan Belton joined Kirk Hawkins in double figures with 10 points each.
Rose-Hulman dropped to 4-6 with its second straight loss on a potential game winning shot at the buzzer. The Fightin' Engineers will face off with tournament host Baldwin Wallace in the consolation game of this week's Holiday Invitational at 3 p.m. on Friday.
