Five in Double Figures Leads RHIT Past Franklin

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology placed five players in double figures and tied a season-high with 86 points to top Franklin College 86-73 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night.

Junior Stephen Schueth led the balanced scoring attack with 17 points on 6-9 from the field.  Sophomore Charlie Aimone contributed a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Other double figure scorers included Ryuji Aoki, Eli Combs and John Czarnecki with 10 points each.  Senior Collin Wojcik contributed nine points to the performance.

John Beineke led four Franklin players in double figures with 21 points.  Braxton Day came off the bench with 17 points for the Grizzlies.

Rose-Hulman shot 46% from the field and hit eight three-pointers in the contest.  The Fightin' Engineers built an eight-point halftime lead by virtue of 50% shooting from the field and Combs with 10 points off the bench.

Franklin trimmed the margin to 23-20 midway through the first half, before Rose-Hulman answered with an 11-2 run to gain a 34-22 lead on a conventional three-point play by Wojcik.  Franklin rallied to trim the margin to eight points at the half.

In the second half, a three-pointer by Kyle Steckel and two free throws by Nick McGrail pushed the Fightin' Engineer lead back to 55-39 with 16:53 left.  Rose-Hulman kept the lead in double figures for the rest of the game.

Rose-Hulman improved to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in league play, while Franklin dropped to 2-4 and 0-2 in conference games.  The Fightin' Engineers open the 2016-17 home schedule on Saturday against HCAC foe Bluffton at 3 p.m.
