TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's track and field team finished first, while the women finished second in the season opening Early Bird Invitational on Saturday at the William Welch Track and Field Complex.
The Fightin' Engineer men scored 258.5 points to outdistance Baldwin Wallace at 128 points and St. Norbert at 127.5. On the women's side, St. Norbert scored 229 points while Rose-Hulman and last week's indoor national champions Baldwin Wallace tied for second at 123.
Rose-Hulman won 11 events and set one school record with the strong overall team performance. Freshman Debie Gedeon set the day's school record, winning the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.47 seconds.
Junior Brendon Mattiuz paced the men's performance with two event wins. Mattiuz won the 800 meters in 2:00.03 and captured the 1,500 meters with a mark of 4:08.54. Other running event winners included Matt Hill in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:39.39), Trevin Grissom in the 400 hurdles (56.62), and the 4-x-400 meter relay team of Brendan Smyth, Isaiah Smith, David Borden and Josh Hennig in a time of 3:22.20.
Men's field event winners included Nathan Green in the pole vault (14' 10") and Trey Sykes in the triple jump (45' 0 1/2").
On the women's side, sophomore Gabi Razma led the day's point scoring performance by sweeping the long jump (16' 4 1/4") and the triple jump (35' 0 1/4"). The 4-x-400 meter team of Razma, Victoria Heckenlively, Anne Boxeth and Addie Johnson also won with a mark of 4:11.80.
Men's runner-up performers included Josh Himes in the discus (149' 4"); Kenton Hipsher in the high jump (6' 1 1/2"); Brandon Loyer in the 5,000 (15:19.54); Robert Myers in the 800 (2:02.17); Nick Palmer in the pole vault (14' 6"); Smyth in the triple jump (43' 1"); Charles Spaeth in the shot put (51' 5 3/4"); Dimitris Valioulis in the 110 hurdles (16.10); and the 4-x-100 relay team of Adam Wilson, Borden, Smith and Hennig in a time of 42.87 seconds.
Women's second-place finishers included Lucinda Combs in the javelin (105' 2"); Heckenlively in the 400 (1:00.64); Johnson in the 400 hurdles (1:08.93); and London in the pole vault (10' 1 1/4").
Rose-Hulman returns to action on Friday at the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis.
