Baseball Team Earns Saturday Sweep at Bluffton

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on timely hitting and a strong pitching performance to sweep Bluffton University 5-2 and 5-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Karson Nixon tossed a complete game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the nightcap as Rose-Hulman earned a 5-0 victory.  In the opener, senior Andrew Stull pitched 7.1 strong innings and allowed just two runs in the 5-2 win.

Offensively, senior Hazen Hamather led the Fightin' Engineer game one attack with three hits, including two doubles, one run scored and one RBI.

The 12-hit game one attack also featured senior Patrick Klima, senior Donnie Waters and junior Drew Schnitz with two hits each.  Klima had two singles and two RBIs, Waters added two singles, and Schnitz had a single, a double and scored once.  Freshman David Burnside added a double and two RBIs.

In the nightcap, the Rose-Hulman offense scored three times in the eighth to break open a 2-0 pitching dual and secure the victory.  Klima had two singles, two RBIs and scored one run, while junior Zach Trusk contributed a single and three RBIs.  Senior Kody Alayon scored twice and had a single in the leadoff spot, while junior Koby Close contributed two runs and a single.

Corey Johnson led the Bluffton effort in game two by allowed just two runs in seven strong innings of work on the mound.

Rose-Hulman improved to 18-7 and leads the HCAC by two games on the loss side at 10-3 in league play.  The Fightin' Engineers and Bluffton conclude their three-game series with a nine-inning contest on Sunday at noon.
