TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Transylvania University remained in first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball standings and extended its winning streak to six games with a 5-3 and 4-1 doubleheader sweep over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.
Jamie Lutes picked up both pitching victories for the Pioneers, as Transylvania improved to 17-10 and 9-1 in HCAC play. Rose-Hulman has a mark of 10-10 and is 1-3 in league games.
In the opener, Meg Liter had two hits for Transylvania and Krista DeBurger scored twice to lead the Pioneer offense. Lutes tossed 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the pitching victory.
Senior Taylor Lockhart tossed a complete game six-hitter with strikeouts for Rose-Hulman and allowed just one earned run. Senior Marissa Stout blasted a two-run home run and had two hits, while sophomore Jenny Miller added a solo home run of her own for the Engineers in game one.
In the nightcap, Brittany Mumford hit a two-run home run, and Liter was joined by Gambrell with two hits each for Transylvania. Lutes allowed one run in six innings, before Stiles pitched the seventh inning to earn a save.
The Rose-Hulman offense was led by an RBI single by Struble. Miller scored the lone run in the nightcap for the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman returns to the diamond on Sunday with a trip to Bluffton University for another conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
