Rose-Hulman Baseball Splits Two at Defiance

DEFIANCE, Ohio -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology retained its three-game lead in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball standings with a 16-5 win and a 5-2 loss at Defiance College on Saturday afternoon.

The Fightin' Engineers pounded out 17 hits and scored multiple runs in six innings in the opener.  In the nightcap, Nick Peters tossed a complete-game seven-hitter to help Defiance capture a 5-2 victory.

The opening game featured three-hit performances from seniors Kody Alayon and Patrick Klima, along with junior Drew Schnitz.  Alayon had two singles, a double, three RBIs and scored twice, while Klima contributed three singles, two runs and one RBI.  Schnitz added two singles, a double and scored three times.

Other Rose-Hulman players with multiple hits in game one included senior Caleb Kissel with two singles, one run and one RBI; senior Donnie Waters with two singles, three RBIs and one run; and Hazen Hamather with a single, a double, three RBIs and two runs scored.  David Burnside and Zach Trusk also scored twice.

The offensive effort helped senior Andrew Stull picked up the pitching victory.  Stull tossed 7.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts.  Chris Sokoloff made his Rose-Hulman varsity debut and recorded the final five outs to complete the game.

In game two, Peters held Rose-Hulman in check and Defiance scored three times in the fourth inning to earn the win.  Junior Koby Close had a double, single and scored one run, while Klima had two singles to pace the Engineer offense.

Rose-Hulman continues to lead Manchester by three games on the loss side in the conference standings after today's results.  The Engineers are 21-8 overall and 13-4 in league play, while Defiance is 16-15 and 9-9 in conference games.  The series concludes with one game on Sunday at noon.
