Rose-Hulman Upsets HCAC-leading Mt. St. Joseph 1-0

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman women's soccer team earned its biggest win of the Fall on Wednesday night as the Fightin' Engineers upset HCAC-leading Mount St. Joseph 1-0 at Intramural Field.

The Lions came in to Wednesday's contest with an overall record of 13-2, 4-1 HCAC and were nearly averaging three goals a game on the strength of almost 21 shots per contest.  The Rose-Hulman defense produced its guttiest performance of the year, limiting the Lions to just nine shots in the match.

In the first half, Rose-Hulman nearly struck for goal on two different occasions.  Sophomore Maddy Twetten fired a pair of shots that required acrobatic saves from the MSJ keeper Michelle Hessling.  Twetten's second shot was fired from 30 yards out and Hessling just got a hand on the ball and flipped it over the crossbar, resulting in an RHIT corner kick.  At the half, Mount St. Joseph owned a very slight 4-3 shot advantage.

Rose-Hulman broke through the Mount St. Joseph defense in the second half.  Senior Kirby Kern nearly scored for Rose in the 66th minute as her header was saved by a diving Michelle Hessling.  Rose-Hulman drew four consecutive corner kicks and it was on the fourth corner that the Figthin' Engineers finally broke through the Lions' defense.  Jillian Caffrey's corner kick led to a scramble in the box and Madeline Romeo managed to find Jessica Wells in traffic who finished the play for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Mount St. Joseph would pressure the Engineer defense for the remainder of the match.  RHIT's defense bent but never broke and the Fightin' Engineers were able to fend off late pushes from Mount St. Joseph, securing the victory.

The upset on Wednesday moves Rose-Hulman to 7-7-1, 4-1-1 HCAC.  The Fightin' Engineers now find themselves in third place of the HCAC standings.  MSJ fell to 13-3, 4-2 HCAC in 2017.  Rose-Hulman will travel to Bluffton on Saturday October 21st.  Kickoff from Ohio is set for 1 p.m.
