LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision in double overtime in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship game Saturday night.
Transylvania scored the first goal of the contest in the 18th minute after Alex Shkraba slipped past the Rose-Hulman keeper Carter Wright and tapped the ball into the back of the net. Rose-Hulman did not panic against a Transylvania defense that had only allowed six goals coming into the HCAC Championship match. The Fightin' Engineers equalized in the 30th minute after Michael Simmons blasted home a kick from 20 yards out to knot the score at 1-1. Through 45 minutes of action Rose-Hulman held a 5-3 shot advantage over Transylvania.
Both teams battled hard in the second half and the Fightin' Engineers were put on the defensive after a red card left RHIT with 10 men. Rose-Hulman managed to fend off several late attacks by the Pioneers to force overtime.
The Pioneers scored 54 seconds into the second overtime to snap the 1-1 tie. The game winner was scored by midfielder Garrett Dean. Transylvania will represent the HCAC in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 2012.
Rose-Hulman ends another strong season with its fifth straight appearance in the HCAC Tournament Championship Game. The Fightin' Engineers complete the season with a 12-5-3 overall record and included a 7-1-1 record in conference play.
