Women's Basketball Holds Off MSJ to Pick Up Key Road Win

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology defended a potential game winning three-pointer at the buzzer to defeat Mount St. Joseph 52-50 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night.

Mount St. Joseph had two chances to tie in the waning seconds.  Aliyah Huff missed a shot in the final seconds that was knocked out of bounds to Mount St. Joseph.  Maddie Haberthy attempted a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer off the inbounds pass that missed as Rose-Hulman picked up the victory.

Junior Chiarra Franklin came off the bench with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Rose-Hulman offense.  Junior Kayla Gerken added 12 points off the bench with three rebounds.

Other key contributors for Rose-Hulman included Alyzia Dilworth with eight points and five rebounds; and Ally Bromenschenkel with six points, one rebound and two steals.

Rose-Hulman shot just 40% for the game, but held Mount St. Joseph to 34% and outrebounded the Lions 40-31 to pick up the tightly contested victory.  The Engineers led 31-26 at the half, before a strong third quarter put Mount St. Joseph ahead 44-38 after three quarters. 

Rose-Hulman relied on its defense and timely scoring to rally and pick up the victory.  The Fightin' Engineers held Mount St. Joseph to just 3-15 from the field in the fourth quarter and shot 54% from the field in the final 10 minutes.

Rose-Hulman improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in HCAC play, while Mount St. Joseph dropped to 4-3 and 1-1 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers travel to Transylvania University for a matchup of teams picked one-two in the HCAC this preseason on Saturday afternoon.
