WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Jonathan Banks tossed six shutout innings and a balanced attack provided the offense as the Fightin' Engineers topped Wartburg 7-1 for their first win of the 2017 season.
Banks tossed six shutout innings to pick up the win. He allowed just five hits and no walks with a career-high eight strikeouts in the victory. Trevor Dallio, Austin Allen and Ian Grant picked up three outs each out of the bullpen to secure the win.
Offensively, Rose-Hulman scored four times in the first inning to jump start the game. The Fightin' Engineers added one run in the seventh and two in the eighth. The four-run first inning was highlighted by a two-run single by David Burnside and an RBI double by Koby Close.
Burnside and Conner Shipley paced the Rose-Hulman offense with two hits each. Burnside scored once with two RBIs, while Shipley had a double, single, one run and one RBI. Ryan Stachowski also provided a double, scored once and had one RBI in the win.
Rose-Hulman improved to 1-3 in Florida, while Wartburg dropped to 2-4. The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Thursday at 11:30 a.m., facing Milwaukee School of Engineering in Auburndale.
