CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team split a pair of games today on Day 3 of their spring trip down in Florida. The Fightin' Engineers knocked off Finlandia in game one but were shutout in game two by St. Mary's University of Minnesota.
Rose-Hulman 10, Finlandia 1 F/5 -
The bats came to life for the Figthin' Engineers in the first game of the day against the Finlandia University Lions. Rose-Hulman collected 12 hits and took advantage of four Findlandia errors to win by a final score of 10-1 on Wednesday morning.
The Lions got on the board first in the bottom half of the first inning but Rose-Hulman answered the bell immediately. Bryly Shipman got the scoring started in a loud way for the Fightin' Engineers as she clubbed a run-scoring double to deep left. Janel Lake followed the double up with a run-scoring single that put the Figthin' Engineers ahead 2-1. RHIT never looked back.
In the top of the fourth inning Jessica Will singled home Lake and then Gabbi Markison poked a single to right that scored Will from second base.
The big inning of the game came in the fifth. Rose-Hulman posted six more runs in the frame to take a 10-1 lead. Both Cydney Ogan and Will hit two-run singles in the inning and Markison tripled to the right-center field gap that plated Will as well. The other run for RHIT came off of a booted ball in the infield.
In Game 1, Will led the way with three RBIs, two hits, and two runs scored. Markison and Lake also had two hits for Rose-Hulman.
Pitcher Michelle Korf was strong on the mound this morning for Rose-Hulman allowing just one run on five hits. She improved her record to 2-1 on the early season.
St. Mary's (Minn.) 3, Rose-Hulman 0 -
The Fightin' Engineers were held to just six scattered hits as St. Mary's (Minn.) shutout Rose-Hulman in game two of the day.
Jessica Will and Gabbi Markison both collected two hits for Rose-Hulman. Through six games Will has gone 6-22 (.273) with four RBIs and Markison has gone 6-21 (.286) with a triple. Cydney Ogan leads the team with a .429 (6-14) batting average, three doubles and five RBIs.
Rose-Hulman now stands at 3-3 on the early season. The Fightin' Engineers will return to the diamond tomorrow for two more games at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. RHIT will face Adrian in the first game and Concrodia-Moorhead in the second game.
