Rose-Hulman Softball Bashes Way to Sunday Sweep

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored a combined 22 runs to sweep MacMurray College in the season opening softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

Rose-Hulman won the opener 8-0 behind a balanced effort of hitting, pitching and defense.  In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman relied on two six-run innings to earn a 14-7 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, junior Michelle Korf tossed a two-hit shutout over five innings to help propel an 8-0 victory.  Korf allowed just two singles with one walk and one strikeout to move to 4-2 on the season.

Offensively, Rose-Hulman blasted two home runs in the contest.  Jenny Miller led the offense with a 3-3 performance that included a round tripper, a double, a single, three runs scored and one RBI.  Gabbi Markison also hammered a ball over the new scoreboard for a solo shot.

Other key offensive contributors in game one included Maddie Struble with two RBIs; Cydney Ogan with a run scored and two RBIs; and Janel Lake with a single and one run scored.

Jessica Thuer led the game two offense with a 2-3 performance that featured a three-run home run, an RBI double and two runs scored.  Miller completed a perfect 5-5 day with a 2-2 performance, three runs scored and her single-season school record tying 14th stolen base.

Other key contributors in game two included Jessica Will with a double, single, one run and one RBI; Morgan Dreyer with a home run, single, three RBIs and two runs scored; and Ogan with a pair of RBIs.

Baylee Sparks picked up the pitching victory by allowing one earned run in 4.2 innings of work to improve to 3-3 on the season.

Rose-Hulman improved to 7-5 overall, while MacMurray dropped to 0-7.  The Fightin' Engineers return home to face Illinois College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a twinbill at the Engineer Softball Field.
