Baseball Narrowly Falls in Extra Inning Thriller

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology pounded out 15 hits, but Otterbein College scored twice in the seventh, once in the eighth and once in the 11th to earn a 7-6 extra-inning victory over the Fightin' Engineers on Sunday afternoon.

Rose-Hulman scored one run in the third, fourth and sixth innings, along with a two-run frame in the fifth, to build a 5-3 lead before the Otterbein rally.  After the Cardinals claimed a 6-5 lead, Rose-Hulman scored once off all-league closer Caleb Norton to force extra innings.

Senior Zach Trusk led the Rose-Hulman offense with four hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Trusk had a double and three singles as part of the 15-hit attack.

Drew Schnitz, Ryan Stachowski, Koby Close and Logan Schiessle had two hits each for the Fightin' Engineers.  Stachowski recorded a double, one run and one RBI; Schnitz had two singles and one RBI; and Close contributed an RBI with his two singles in the contest.

The Fightin' Engineer pitching staff had some highlights in the contest.  Jonathan Banks allowed just two earned runs with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.  Stone Brogan tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and Clayton Mayfield tossed a scoreless 10th before an RBI single by Connor Brett won the game for Otterbein in the 11th.

Brock Frentzel had a home run, and Tyler Thompson scored twice with two hits to lead the Cardinals offense.

Rose-Hulman opens its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a three-game home series against Earlham College on Friday and Saturday.  The single game is Friday at 6 p.m., with a Saturday twinbill set for noon.  Otterbein improved to 11-3 on the season.
