Baseball Earns Doubleheader Split with Hanover

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled to a tightly contested doubleheader split with Hanover College in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon.

Hanover won the opener 5-3, before Rose-Hulman captured the nightcap 6-5.  The Panthers topped the host Fightin' Engineers in 2-of-3 games on the weekend after winning 5-4 last night.

In the opener, Hanover rallied from a 2-1 deficit with four runs in the eighth inning to capture the win.  Chase Sizemore, Ty Stover, Josh Meszaros and Alec Dunn led the Panthers offense with two hits each.  Cody Reister came out of the bullpen with four innings and allowing just one earned run to move to 4-0.

Rose-Hulman was led by Drew Schnitz, David Burnside, Luke Buehler and Logan Schiessle with two hits each.  Burnside and Schiessle each tallied one RBI in the effort.  Marcus Wechselberger added a single and scored one run to balance the attack.

Ian Grant allowed just one run over the first seven innings with six strikeouts to keep the Fightin' Engineers within striking distance.

In the nightcap, Wechselberger drew a bases loaded walk in the ninth inning to give Rose-Hulman a 6-5 victory.  Conner Shipley led the offense with two hits and a key two-run single to tie the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth.  Ryan Stachowski also had two hits and scored once, with Koby Close providing two RBIs.

Chuck Alexa picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.  Jacob Schult, Drew Borman and Sean Casey also allowed no earned runs out of the Rose-Hulman bullpen in game two.

Senior Zach Trusk also set a new career school record for hit by pitches.  Trusk was hit by a pitch in each game to increase his career total to 46 in four years as a starter.

Hanover stands 13-7 overall and 4-4 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman has a mark of 5-14 and 3-4.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action at Victory Field in Indianapolis on Tuesday with a matchup against Anderson University.
