Baseball Pounds Franklin to Remain First in HCAC

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored 15 combined runs in the third and fourth innings to earn 19-11 victory at Franklin College in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon.

With two outs in the top of the third, the Fightin' Engineers exploded for seven runs on eight hits to take an 8-1 lead.  The next inning provided eight more runs and six more hits as the lead expanded to 16-4 after the fourth.

Rose-Hulman recorded season-high totals of 19 runs and 21 hits in the victory.  Sophomore Conner Shipley led the attack with four hits, two runs scored and one RBI.  Sophomore David Burnside added three singles, two runs and two RBIs.

The offensive attack included a total of seven players with multiple hits.  Davis Robeson had a single, double, two runs and one RBI.  Drew Schnitz recorded two singles, scored three runs and added two RBIs.  Brian Thomas blasted a home run and had a double with three runs scored and two RBIs.  Marcus Wechselberger contributed two singles, two runs and one RBI.  Koby Close rounded out the multiple-hit Engineers with two singles, three RBIs and one run scored.

Other key offensive contributors included Ryan Stachowski with a double, two RBIs and one run; and Logan Schiessle with two RBIs and one run scored.

The balanced attack helped Jonathan Banks improve to 2-1 on the season with a five-inning performance.  Banks allowed just two hits and pitched around six walks with five strikeouts to earn the win.  Three relievers combined to record the final 12 outs.

Franklin rallied with four runs in the fourth, two in the seventh and three in the ninth to bring the final margin closer.  Nick Wright led the Grizzlies with two home runs and five RBIs.

Rose-Hulman maintained first place in the HCAC standings at 12-4 in league play with the win, while Franklin dropped to 9-7.  The Fightin' Engineers host Defiance College in a three-game HCAC series on Friday and Saturday at Art Nehf Field.
