Baseball Qualifies for HCAC Tourney Despite Loss

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Despite falling on Sunday at Mount St. Joseph, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team will compete in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament starting Thursday at Earlham College.

Mount St. Joseph scored seven runs in the seventh inning to break open a close game and defeat Rose-Hulman 9-0 at the University of Cincinnati.  The Fightin' Engineers qualified for the HCAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed after Manchester defeated Franklin 9-5 on Sunday afternoon.

Rose-Hulman will face Earlham at noon on Thursday in Richmond,  Mount St. Joseph also qualified for the conference tournament and will face Manchester on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Conner Shipley led the Rose-Hulman offense with a pair of singles.  Brian Thomas added a double.  Ian Grant had a strong start on the mound, allowing just one earned run with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

Matt Hofmann, Nathan Hunter, Ryan McCauley and Kyree Hawkins paced the Mount St. Joseph offense with two hits each.  Zak Farmer picked up the pitching win with five strikeouts and four hits allowed in no earned runs for the Lions.

Mount St. Joseph clinched a spot in the HCAC by improving to 22-18 overall and 16-11 in league play.  The Fightin' Engineers complete the regular season at 18-22 and also 16-11 in conference games.
