TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- One of the largest crowds in Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's soccer history showcased its support in the fight against brain cancer, as the Fightin' Engineers narrowly fell 1-0 to DePauw University in an evenly played matchup Thursday night.
Rose-Hulman outshot the visiting Tigers 9-6 in the contest, mounting pressure in the second half after DePauw scored the lone goal in the opening half. Jessica Wells and Desiree Bell fired two shots each to lead the Fightin' Engineer offense, with both having strong strikes near the DePauw box in the last 15 minutes. Madeline Romeo also fired two shots.
DePauw scored in the ninth minute, as a scramble in the box was put away by Alex Wendt for the goal. Wendt led the Tiger offense with two shots.
Both goalkeepers, Carli Weinberg of Rose-Hulman and Natalie Sheeks of DePauw, were strong in the net. Sheeks had three saves in the shutout for the Tigers.
With free pizza and free T-shirts made available for students, fans of both teams combined to raise over $450 toward the fight against brain cancer.
DePauw improved to 1-3 after facing one of the nation's toughest schedules early in the season. Rose-Hulman stands 2-4 and hosts Millikin University on Saturday at the Engineer Intramural Field.
