LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Stout defenses were on display Saturday afternoon as the Rose-Hulman women's soccer team came up just short in their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener, falling at Transylvania University by a final score of 1-0.
Both the Fightin' Engineers and Pioneers used strong defenses the entire match to limit offensive opportunities. Rose-Hulman was held to four shot attempts through the first 80 minutes of action before mounting a late flurry of attempts. The Engineers finished with 10 shot attempts, seven of which were on goal. The Pioneers only fired four shots in the game.
Parris Chew scored her first goal of the season in the 70th minute. Chew's attack was the only shot on goal for Transylvania.
Samantha Jacobs, Jessica Wells, and Madeline Romeo led the Rose-Hulman offense with two shots each. The Engineers had a strong chance to score in the 81st minute when Wells fired a shot in the box that clanged off of the crossbar and then was cleared by the Transylvania defense.
Rose-Hulman fell to 3-7-0, 0-1-0 HCAC. Transy improved to 3-5-2, 1-0-0 HCAC. Rose-Hulman will return to the pitch on October 3rd when the Fightin' Engineers take on in-state rival Earlham College at 3:30 pm in Richmond, Indiana.
