HANOVER, Ind. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team battled adversity on Wednesday night but the Fightin' Engineers used a big second half push to comeback against the Hanover College Panthers and steal a 65-55 road victory. Rose-Hulman extended their lengthy win streak to 15 games and the Fightin' Engineers remained undefeated in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, moving to 13-0.
Rose-Hulman and Hanover battled from the tip and the Panthers led the HCAC-leading Fightin' Engineers by two, 15-13, at the end of the first quarter. Both teams struggled offensively in the opening frame as RHIT and Hanover both shot under 30% from the floor. Rose-Hulman's offense was held in check in the second quarter as well as the Fightin' Engineers shot just 5-15 from the floor. Hanover capitalized on a few transition opportunities and the Panthers shot 8-13 from the field in the second frame. At the half, Rose-Hulman trailed by seven, 35-28.
The Fightin' Engineers opened the third quarter with a 17-4 run to grab a 45-39 lead midway through the period. The Panthers closed the gap over the remaining minutes of the third period and led by one, 50-49 entering the fourth quarter.
Rose-Hulman entered Wednesday's contest with one of the top defenses in the nation, allowing just over 47 points per game. The Fightin' Engineers held Hanover to just five points in the final period and were able to pull way from HC. Hanover shot just 1-10 from the floor in the fourth quarter while Rose made 8 of 18 field goal attempts.
For the contest Rose-Hulman went 26-68 (38%) from the field. The Engineers made 10 of 13 foul shot attempts and outrebounded the Panthers 47-35. Hanover was held to 36% (19-53) shooting for the game and made 15 of 27 free throw attempts.
Rose-Hulman placed three Engineers in double figures. Ally Bromenschenkel scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and blocked four shots. Senior Lindsey Fagerberg nearly reached her career-high and finished with 16 points on 8-17 shooting. Fagerberg added seven rebounds and two assists. Chiarra Franklin scored 11 points in the victory.
The win moved Rose-Hulman to 17-3, 13-0 HCAC on the season. Hanover dropped to 12-8, 8-5 HCAC. Rose-Hulman will have another stout road test on Saturday February 3 when the Fightin' Engineers travel to Bluffton University. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
