ORLANDO, Fla. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on clutch play at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles flights to earn a hard fought 5-4 win over Augustana (Ill.) to open a Tuesday doubleheader at the USTA National Tennis Center.
In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman won at all three doubles position and five singles spots in an 8-1 victory over Adrian University.
Against Augustana, Rose-Hulman relied on two third-set tiebreaker wins in singles play to complete the comeback victory. Andrew Schiffman picked up a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (12-10) win by capturing a tightly contested third set super tiebreak. With the match tied at 4-4, Cam Metzger picked up the deciding point by winning back-to-back tiebreakers 7-3 in the second set and 10-4 in the third.
Other winners for Rose-Hulman included Ian Landwehr in straight sets at No. 1 singles; Andre Adam in three sets at No. 3 singles; and the No. 2 doubles team of Metzger and Adam.
In the nightcap, the doubles sweep included wins by Landwehr and Austin Perry at No. 1; Metzger and Adam at No. 2; and Schiffman and Brendan Goldacker at No. 3.
In singles play, winners included Landwehr, Metzger, Adam, Schiffman and Perry at the top five singles flights.
Rose-Hulman improved to 3-4 on the season and 3-1 against NCAA Division III competition. The Fightin' Engineers cap their spring trip against Division III Concordia-Moorhead and Division I Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday.
