Rose-Hulman Earns Two Wins on Day 2 of Spring Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team won both of its game on Tuesday.  RHIT defeated Augustana (Ill.) 6-2 in the first game of the day and then came back against Capital in the second game of the morning, defeating the Crusaders 6-5.

Rose-Hulman 6, Augustana (Ill.) 2 - Rose-Hulman squared off against CCIW-member Augustana in the first matchup of the morning Tuesday.

Much like yesterday, the Fightin' Engineers put together a big inning to jump out to an early lead.  Rose-Hulman scored all six of its runs in the top of the 3rd.  Mandi Routon got things started offensively for Rose with an RBI single to center.  A few batters later, Jenny Miller hit an RBI single to center that scored another run.  Maddie Struble got an RBI base hit that made the score 3-0.  Rose-Hulman scored twice in the inning on wild pitches.  The sixth and final Rose-Hulman run scored via an error in the field on Augustana.

The Vikings got both of their two runs in the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Fightin' Engineers tallied 10 hits in the contest.  Routon, Struble, and Gabbi Markison each went 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI in the win.  Pitcher Michelle Korf (1-1) earned her first win of the season after she scattered seven hits and two runs over six innings of work.  Jenny Miller came on in the 7th inning and got the three final outs.

Rose-Hulman 6, Capital 5 - In the second game of the day, Rose-Hulman earned a comeback, walk-off win against OAC-member Capital.

The Crusaders struck first in the game, scoring a pair of runs in the top half of the 1st inning.  Rose-Hulman answered right back with a pair of runs of their own in the home half of the 1st.  Jenny Miller reached on a fielder's choice but the third baseman's throw to second sailed into the right-center field gap and rolled all the way to wall.  The error allowed both Miller and Gabbi Markison to score on the play.

Capital quickly went back in front following an RBI single in the top of the 2nd inning.

Rose-Hulman rallied again in the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Markison hit an RBI single to right that scored Cydney Ogan, tying the game 3-3.  Jenny Miller gave Rose-Hulman a 4-3 lead with a single to center.

Capital would get a run in both the top of the 4th and 5th innings to go back in front 5-4.

Down to their final three outs in the bottom of the 7th, the Fightin' Engineers showed that they had a little more fight left in them on Tuesday.  After a Rose-Hulman baserunner got aboard, Mandi Routon hit an RBI triple to deep right center that tied the game at 5-5.  Gabbi Markison completed the comeback with a walk-off single to center that gave Rose-Hulman a 6-5 win.  Markison went 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI against Capital.

Alexis Price pitched four innings against the Crusaders on Tuesday.  Jenny Miller went three innings and earned her first win of the season after allowing just one run.

The Fightin' Engineers have now won three games in a row and are 3-1 on the young season.  Rose will return to action tomorrow morning at 9 and 11:30 am against York (Pa.) and Eastern (Pa.).
