TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won 17 events and relied on its depth for a strong performance in the season opening Early Bird Invitational at the William Welch Track & Field Complex on Saturday.
The men's squad scored 269 points to outdistance the competition in the 10-team event. DePauw came home second with 99 points and Thomas More was third with 66.5.
On the women's side, Baldwin Wallace won a tight meet with 187 points compared to Rose-Hulman at 143. Hanover, Franklin and Defiance rounded out the top five.
Individually, the men's squad was led by Trey Sykes with two individual event wins and a third victory on the 4-x-100 meter relay. Sykes won the long jump (20' 11") and triple jump (43' 5") to open the outdoor campaign.
Other individual field event winners for Rose-Hulman included Eric Fiacable in the hammer throw (169' 2"); Nick Palmer in the pole vault (14' 6 1/4"); and Nathan Schrader in the javelin (177' 11").
Four individuals and two relays captured first-place honors for the Rose-Hulman men in running events. Winners included Dawson Allen in the 100-meter dash (11.52); John Evans in the 400-hurdles (58.57); Josh Hennig in the 400 (49.20); and Aaron Lannoy in the 1,500 (4:09.12).
The 4-x-100 and 4-x-400 meter relay teams also captured first place. The 4-x-100 meter included Allen, Sykes, Kristian Zadlo and Hennig in 43.52 seconds. The 4-x-400 squad featured David Borden, Lannoy, Evans and Hennig in 3:21.58.
On the women's side, Rose-Hulman won three track and three field events. Field event winners included Lauren London in the long jump (17' 4"); Gabi Razma in the triple jump (35' 10 1/2"); and Jaclyn Setina in the high jump (5' 4 1/4").
In running events, Razma captured the 400-meter dash in 1:01.97 and Kally Morozin won the 1,500 in 5:03.73. The 4-x-400 relay team of Razma, Clare Bruns, Lois Cheatham and Victoria Heckenlively wrapped up the meet with a win in 4:15.43.
Rose-Hulman returns to action at the Washington University (Mo.) Invitational next Saturday in St. Louis.
