DEFIANCE, Ohio - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology dropped a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball games at Defiance College on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 - Defiance 4, Rose-Hulman 0 - 8 Innings
Rose-Hulman and Defiance College played free softball in game one of the afternoon. The Yellow Jackets slipped past the Fightin' Engineers following a walk-off grand slam from Brooke Gostomsky in the bottom of the 8th.
Rose-Hulman pitcher Michelle Korf was strong all afternoon in the pitcher's circle before surrendering the grand slam. Korf pitched 7.1 innings and scattered five hits. She also struck out a pair.
Offensively Rose-Hulman was held to four hits. Junior Mandi Routon went 2-3. Senior Gabbi Markison hit a double.
Game 2 - Defiance 11, Rose-Hulman 3 - 6 Innings
Rose-Hulman got out to an early lead in the second game of the afternoon but Defiance rallied midway through the contest to complete the sweep.
Maddie Struble gave Rose-Hulman an early 1-0 lead following an RBI single to right that scored Jenny Miller.
Defiance would go on to score the next seven runs in the ballgame. Rose-Hulman scored a pair in the top of the 6th to get within 7-3, following a two-run double from Mandi Routon.
The Yellow Jackets would answer right back with four in the home half of the 6th to seal the win.
Rose-Hulman will return to the RHIT Softball Field on Tuesday April 24 in the home finale next week. First pitch of that doubleheader is set for 5:30 p.m.
