Buehler Shutout Leads Rose-Hulman to Split with Defiance

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a pitching shutout to earn a split of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Defiance College on Saturday at Art Nehf Field.

In the opener, sophomore Luke Buehler tossed a nine-inning shutout to lead Rose-Hulman to an 8-0 victory.  Buehler allowed just seven singles and one walk with five strikeouts in the complete game performance.

Offensively, the Fightin' Engineers scored two runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings to secure the win.  Davis Robeson led the offense with three hits, including a triple, with two RBIs.  Conner Shipley also had three hits, with a double, and scored three runs.

Other key offensive contributors in game one included Conner Helbling with two singles and three RBIs; Luke Calabrese with two singles, one run and one RBI; and David Burnside with two walks and two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Defiance relied on its own strong pitching performance in a 2-1 victory.  Jon Brown tossed the first 5.1 innings, before Troy Konwinski pitched 3.2 scoreless innings to earn the save.  Glen Collier and Tyler Weaver led the Yellow Jackets with two hits each.

Trever Bruno suffered the hard luck loss on the mound for Rose-Hulman.  Bruno allowed just hits and two runs in eight innings of work.

Offensively, Calabrese had two hits and one RBI to lead the Engineer offense.  Shipley added a single and scored one run.

Rose-Hulman stands 12-20 and 6-7 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Defiance has an 8-17 mark and is 2-9 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers return home with a non-conference matchup against DePauw University on Wednesday.
