Baseball Finishes 3rd in HCAC Tournament to Cap 20-Win Season

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from a six-run deficit to tie the score at 7-7, before an eighth inning grand slam by Anderson University proved the difference in an 11-7 loss in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference elimination game on Saturday morning at Franklin College.

Rose-Hulman trailed 7-1 before four pinch hitters sparked a rally that knotted the score at 7-7 entering the bottom of the eighth inning.  Brian Thomas opened a five-run eighth inning with a sacrifice fly, and Zach Witonsky added a two-run single.  David Burnside and Marcus Wechselberger drew bases loaded walks to bring the score within 7-6 after the top of the seventh.

In the eighth, Conner Shipley lined a single into single field to score Harris Camp and knot the score.  Anderson infielder Joseph Moran broke the tie with a grand slam to make the score 11-7, before Shaine Mitchell leaped over the left field fence to bring back a potential Raven home run later in the eighth inning to spark the Rose-Hulman defense.

Nick Butcher led Anderson with a 4-4 performance and three runs scored.  Moran added three hits and a game-high six RBIs for the Ravens.

Shipley paced Rose-Hulman with three singles and two runs scored.  Luke Calabrese had a pair of singles and scored one run, and Burnside had two RBIs for the offense.

Ben Yoss led the pitching effort with three solid innings of middle relief to keep the score at a point that Rose-Hulman could rally to force the tie.

Following the tournament, Calabrese and Shipley were named to the HCAC All-Tournament Team.

Rose-Hulman finished the season with a 20-23 record, while Anderson advanced to face Franklin College in the championship round.  Franklin would later win the HCAC Championship by a 7-1 score in the title game.
