Baseball Falls in Extra Inning Thriller to Close 2019 Florida Spring Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Penn State-Abington broke open a 1-1 tie with a three-run rally in the 12th inning to claim a 4-1 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the finale of the 2019 Fightin' Engineer spring break trip on Friday morning.

Rose-Hulman had several opportunities to secure the win, as the Fightin' Engineers left two runners in scoring position in the 8th inning and left the bases loaded in the 9th and 11th.  After Penn Statee-Abington relied on clutch pitching to get out of the jams, the Nittany Lions broke the game open with a two-run double by Tyler Diparti to seccure the victory.

Jacob Petrisko was sharp on the mound to help keep Rose-Hulman within striking distance.  Petrisko allowed just three hits and one run in six innings, along with five strikeouts, to keep the score knotted at 1-1.

The Rose-Hulman bullpen tossed five scoreless innings to force extra frames.  Luke Buehler struck out the side in 10 pitches in the 8th to highlight a four-strikeout, two-inning scoreless outing.  Clayton Mayfield also contributed two scoreless innings to the performance.

Rose-Hulman trailed for much of the day before tying the score at 1-1 after seven innings.  Singles by Josh Mesenbrink and Shaine Mitchell started the rally, and Davis Robeson knotted the score with a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Brett Tuttle with the game tying run.

Mitchell and Robeson led the Rose-Hulman offense with two hits each.  Conner Helbling added a double to the Fightin' Engineer effort.

Penn State-Abington improved to 2-3, while Rose-Hulman completes its spring trip with a 3-2 record.  The Fightin' Engineers are scheduled to open the home slate on Saturday March 9 with games against Illinois Tech and MacMurray.
