CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology gave a strong battle to two regionally ranked foes in Iowa, before falling 5-4 to Augustana (Ill.) and 7-2 to Coe in men's tennis action on Saturday.
Against Augustana, Rose-Hulman won three singles and one doubles match. Another match went to a third and deciding set before a Vikings victory.
Winners for Rose-Hulman included Ian Landwehr with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles; Josh Giambattista with a 7-6, 7-6 victory at No. 5 singles; and Grant Stamper with a 3-set win at No. 6 singles.
The No. 2 doubles team of Landwehr and Austin Perry rallied from a 6-5 deficit to capture an 8-6 win for Rose-Hulman.
In the opener, Rose-Hulman picked up victories at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles in a 7-2 loss to Coe. Landwehr picked up a straight set win at No. 1 singles, and the doubles team of Ben Strate and Joseph Conrad won in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles.
Rose-Hulman opens the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday with trips to Defiance and Anderson. The Fightin' Engineers have won 39 consecutive matches against HCAC competition and have not lost to an HCAC opponent since May 2014.
