Men's Tennis Tops Earlham 7-2 in Battle of Premier HCAC Teams

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won at five singles flights and in two doubles matches to pick up a 7-2 victory over Earlham College in a battle of the top two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's tennis programs on Sunday at the Wabash Valley Tennis Center.

Rose-Hulman won its 41st consecutive match against HCAC competition dating back to May 2014 with the victory.  Earlham has been the HCAC runner-up in each of the past two seasons and three times during Rose-Hulman's current four-season HCAC championship run.

The Fightin' Engineers won at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles flights to take an early 2-1 lead.  Andre Adam and Josh Giambattista picked up an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, and Ian Landwehr joined Austin Perry for an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.  The third doubles team of Joseph Conrad and Grant Stamper battled into a tiebreaker before falling 8-7 to the Quakers.

Singles play continued the day's tough battle, as four of the six matches went three sets.  Landwehr earned a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles, with Stamper winning 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6 singles to give Rose-Hulman a 4-1 advantage.  The four three-set matches included wins by Adam at No. 2 singles; Conrad at No. 4; and Giambattista at No. 5.

Rose-Hulman improved to 2-0 in HCAC play and 3-9 overall after facing one of the most challenging schedules in the Midwest during the offseason.  The Fightin' Engineer non-conference scheduled included one match against NCAA Division I opposition; two matches against Division II foes; three matches against top 25 ranked NCAA Division III competition; and two matches against regionally ranked NCAA Division III squads.  Earlham dropped to 7-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Fightin' Engineers return to action next Saturday with home matches against Transylvania and Webster.
