Baseball Stays Unbeaten in HCAC Play with Sweep at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology remained undefeated at 6-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball action with a 4-0 and 7-4 doubleheader sweep at Transylvania University on Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, junior Luke Buehler threw eight shutout innings and Brian Pershing added a scoreless ninth to lead a 4-0 Engineer victory.  Buehler improved to 5-0 and allowed just four hits with nine strikeouts, while Pershing had one strikeout.

Offensively, Rose-Hulman scored two runs in the third, one in the second and one in the sixth to pick up the victory.  Conner Helbling paced the team with two hits, including a double, and two runs scored.  Logan Cody and Luke Calabrese each contributed a double and an RBI.  

Other key contributors included Conner Shipley and Davis Robeson with a single and a run scored; and Ryan Stachowski with a single and an RBI.

In the nightcap, Rose-Hulman relied on a five-run third inning to pick up a 7-4 win.  The Fightin' Engineers pounded out 14 hits in the contest led by Stachowski with three hits, one run and one RBI. 

Robeson, Cody, Helbling and Harris Camp pitched in with two hits each.  Robeson scored once with one RBI; Cody had a triple, single, scored twice and added one RBI; Helbling had two singles and one RBI; and Camp tallied a pair of singles.

The offense was enough for three Rose-Hulman pitchers to combine in the victory.  Clayton Mayfield pitched the first six innings with five strikeouts to move to 3-1 on the season.  Stone Brogan added two scoreless frames with two strikeouts.  Quintin Bynum tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Rose-Hulman improved to 6-0 in HCAC play and continues to lead the conference standings.  The Fightin' Engineers are 17-8 overall, while Transylvania dropped to 12-18 and 5-5 in league games.  Rose-Hulman hosts Franklin College in another HCAC doubleheader on Tuesday at Art Nehf Field.
