TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won 10 events to take home first place in the men's competition and second in the women's team scoring at the DePauw University Invitational on Saturday.
The men's squad scored 192 points to outdistance Wabash at 105 and Centre at 92. Illinois Wesleyan won the women's meet with 162.5 points, with Rose-Hulman second at 104.5 and Berea third at 98.
On the men's side, Eric Fiacable led the Fightin' Engineers with three first-place efforts in throwing events. Fiacable won the hammer with the fourth-best throw in NCAA Division III so far this season (193' 2"). He also captured top honors in the discus (151' 2") and the shot put (48' 7 1/4").
Other field event winners for the men included Nick Palmer in the pole vault (15' 1"); Nathan Schrader with the third-best javelin mark in school history and the No. 9 ranked mark in NCAA Division III so far this season (196' 1"); and Trey Sykes with the seventh-best triple jump in NCAA Division III this year (47' 0 1/4"). Schrader also set a new HCAC open record with his javelin mark of 196' 1".
Men's running event winners included Aaron Lannoy in the 800-meter run (1:56.35); and Noah Thomas with the fourth-best mark in Rose-Hulman history in the 200-meter dash (22.10). The 4-x-400 meter relay team of Stephen Payne, Jacob Back, Lannoy and Isaiah Lilje also came home first in 3:23.56.
On the women's side, Lauren London picked up Rose-Hulman's event victory with a long jump mark of 17' 4 1/4".
The women's performance featured six runner-up finishes. Cassie Utley came home second in both the discus (123' 6") and the javelin (108' 7") to pace the individual second-place efforts. Mary-Helen Shomba added a runner-up in the 100-hurdles (15.29) and Dara Smith was second in the high jump (5' 1 1/4").
Both Rose-Hulman women's relay teams also came home second. The team of London, Shomba, Adekite Oladipupo and Tina Rogers completed the 4-x-100 in 49.63 seconds, and Lois Cheatham, Clare Bruns, Smith and Rogers finished the 4-x-400 in 4:11.07.
On the men's side, Rose-Hulman had five second-place efforts. Individual runner-ups included Nolan Gross in the 3,000-steeplechase (9:57.03); Schrader in the shot put (46' 8"); Matthew Stevenot in the 1500 (4:06.18); Thomas in the 100 (11.16); and Jonah Yates in the discus (142' 9").
Third-place finishers for the women's squad included Bruns in the 400-hurdles (1:08.70); London in the 60-hurdles (15.49) and Kally Morozin in the 800-meter run (2:26.13). On the men's side, Schrader came home third in the discus (137' 11") and Yates was third in the shot put (46' 7 3/4").
Rose-Hulman will compete at the Indiana Division III Championships at DePauw next weekend.
