Rose-Hulman Baseball Sweeps Hanover, Moves to 13-1 in HCAC Play

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology earned a pair of baseball wins in vastly different ways over Hanover College on Wednesday, winning the first game 16-11 before capturing the nightcap 3-2.  With the wins, Rose-Hulman improved to 13-1 in HCAC play and moved within one victory of clinching hosting rights for next week's league tournament.

In the opener, Rose-Hulman pounded out 16 hits to improve to 12-1 in HCAC play to keep the conference lead following Wednesday's action.  Conner Shipley led the offense with four hits and four runs scored, along with two RBIs.  Shipley had three singles and a double in the contest.

David Burnside blasted a home run and had two hits, three runs scored and four RBIs.  Other players with multiple hits included Ryan Stachowski with two doubles, one run and two RBIs; Conner Helbling with two singles, three RBIs and one run scored; Logan Cody with a single, double and three RBIs; and Luke Calabrese with two singles, one run and one RBI.

Harris Camp added a single, three walks and two runs scored.  Davis Robeson also scored three times and had a single with three walks.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 12-1 lead in game one with three runs in the first, four in the second and five in the third.  After a grand slam by Grant Larimore of Hanover closed the margin to 12-5, before the Engineers answered with four runs in the sixth to secure the win.

In the nightcap, a dominant relief pitching performance from freshman Matthew Rouse propelled the Engineers to a 3-2 victory.  Rouse entered with the Engineers trailing 1-0 and retired 21 consecutive batters to start his relief appearance.  Rouse struck out 11 of the 21 batters and improved to 3-0 on the season by allowing just one run in his seven-plus inning stint.  Clayton Mayfield recorded the final three outs for the save.

Offensively, Stachowski led the Engineers with a solo home run.  Burnside and Helbling each added doubles, and Camp scored once to help Rose-Hulman generate enough offensive for the win.  Zach Chapman led Hanover with seven strong innings and allowing just two earned runs.

The Engineers improved to 24-9 and 13-1 in league play, while Hanover dropped to 13-19 and 5-11 in conference games.  Rose-Hulman will close the 2019 regular seaon with a doubleheader against Anderson University on Saturday at 1 pm.  The site has been switched to Rose-Hulman, although Anderson will be the home team on the scoreboard.
