Rose-Hulman Baseball Splits Two in Friday Games in HCAC Tournament

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology split a pair of games on Friday at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Art Nehf Field.

In the opener, the Fightin' Engineers picked up a 6-4 victory over Defiance College.  In the nightcap, Franklin relied on a complete game pitching performance to defeat Rose-Hulman 7-2.

On Friday afternoon, Logan Cody provided the big blast of the day with a three-run home run in the fifth inning to key the Rose-Hulman offensive attack in the Defiance win.  Cody's blast gave the Engineers a 5-1 advantage.  Ryan Stachowski added a two-run double in the first inning to give Rose-Hulman a lead the Fightin' Engineers would not relinquish.

Clayton Mayfield picked up the win with six strong innings, allowing three runs with four strikeouts, to move to 5-1 on the season.  Stone Brogan allowed no runs in one inning, and Matthew Rouse picked up his first save with two innings to close the game.

Cody led the Rose-Hulman offense with three RBIs along with two hits and two runs scored.  Stachowski had three hits and two RBIs, and Conner Shipley also had a multiple-hit game with two singles, one run and one RBI.

In game two, Aaron Leming tossed a complete game seven-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead Franklin to a 7-2 victory.  Sam Claycamp had two RBIs and Jarrod Smith recorded two hits and scored two runs to lead the Franklin offense.

Rose-Hulman scored two runs in the fifth inning but was otherwise shutdown.  Shipley and Harris Camp had a single and an RBI for the Engineer offense.  Sean Casey and Luke Kluemper scored runs for the Engineers.

Luke Buehler recorded seven strikeouts in a six-inning outing for the Rose-Hulman pitching staff.

Rose-Hulman stands 26-11 on the season.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday against Defiance.  The winner of the 12:30 p.m. will need to defeat Franklin on Saturday afternoon and Sunday to earn the HCAC championship, while the Grizzlies are one win away from the title.
