No. 2 Mount Union Picks Up Season Opening Win at Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Thirteen-time NCAA Division III national champion and No. 2 ranked Mount Union showed its strength with a 66-14 win at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the football season opener for both teams at Cook Stadium on Saturday night.

D'Angelo Fulford finished 16-22 through the air for 288 yards and six touchdowns, with Justin Hill making five catches for 148 yards and four scores for the Purple Raiders.  Josh Petruccelli added 149 rushing yards and one score to balance the Mount Union offense.

Rose-Hulman scored a pair of touchdowns against a Mount Union team that held nine opponents to fewer than 14 points last season.  Shane Welshans had the big play of the night with a 68-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to cap a two-play scoring drive.

In the first half, Andrew Dion connected with Noah Thomas for a 60-yard touchdown that brought Rose-Hulman to within 28-7 early in the second quarter.

The Fightin' Engineer defense was forced to battle a Mount Union team that scored 50 or more points in a game 10 times last season.  Zach Phillips had a team-high nine tackles, with Jacob Hendrich adding six tackles, two tackles-for-loss and one sack.  Corey Vincent also had a sack on the evening.

The game was Rose-Hulman's first on its new synthetic turf field.  The Old National Bank Night game featured over 2,000 fans in attendance, with over 6,000 more viewers to the online and Facebook video feeds of the matchup.

The Fightin' Engineers return to action next Saturday night at Rhodes College.
