Men's Basketball Faces Transy for NCAA Tourney Bid on Sunday at 2:30

TERRE HAUTE, Ind -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will face Transylvania University in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Game on Sunday at 2:30 pm.  The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

  • Rose-Hulman has knocked off No. 3 Hanover and No. 2 Franklin to reach Sunday's HCAC Tournament Championship Game against No. 1 Transylvania. 
  • Craig McGee recorded a triple-double in Friday's 69-63 win over Hanover, and John Czarnecki paced four players in double figures with a season-high 20 points in Saturday's 83-68 win over Franklin.
  • Rose-Hulman has reached the HCAC Tournament Championship Game six times in the last nine years.  The Fightin' Engineers have reached the HCAC Tournament title game in every even-numbered year since 2012.
  • Rose-Hulman is in search of its 12th NCAA Division III Tournament bid in program history on Sunday.  The Fightin' Engineers made three straight NCAA Tourney appearances in 2012, 2013 and 2014 (their most recent NCAA appearance).
  • Craig McGee has crossed the 1,000-point mark at Rose-Hulman (1,121) and set the RHIT single-season assist record (170) against Franklin on Saturday.
  • John Czarnecki has joined McGee in Rose-Hulman's 32-player men's basketball 1,000-point club.  Czarnecki has tallied 1,006 career points.
  • Eli Combs has provided a big lift in the HCAC Tournament with 14 points against Hanover and 12 vs. Franklin.
  • Michael Lake led the Engineers in scoring with 16 points against Hanover and had a career-high five steals vs. Franklin.
  • Max Chaplin also reached double figures in scoring this weekend with 11 points against Franklin.
  • Samvit Ram picked the HCAC Tournament for a career-high scoring night with eight points against Franklin.
  • McGee ranks No. 4 in the HCAC in scoring (16.8 ppg), No. 2 in rebounding (8.0 rpg), and No. 1 in the conference in assists (6.3 apg).
  • Rusty Loyd (95-65, 6th year at Rose-Hulman) seeks his first NCAA Division III Tournament as Rose-Hulman head coach and this is his third HCAC title game in six years as head coach.

Transylvania (18-8, 13-5 HCAC) News & Notes:

  • Transylvania won a share of the HCAC regular season title to earn hosting rights for this weekend's HCAC Tournament.
  • Transylvania swept this season's series over Rose-Hulman with victories of 83-79 (at RH) and 88-67 (at TU).
  • Transylvania seeks its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013 in Sunday's game.
  • Head coach Brian Lane has a career record of 312-195 in his 19th year at Transylvania.
  • Four Pioneers average double figures in scoring, led by Gabe Schmitt (17.1 ppg) and Michael Jefferson (15.4 ppg).
