TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's basketball defeated Mount St. Joseph on Saturday 60-56 to improve to 3-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
MSJ held a nine-point lead in the first half before Rose-Hulman used a 10-3 run in the final five minutes to cut the deficit to 30-29 at the break. The Engineers then used another 10-3 run to open the second half and never fell behind, building a lead to as many as 15 points.
The Lions roared back late in the second half, bringing the RHIT lead to only three points.
Trey Wurtz and
Jackson Kabrick knocked down three free throws in the final 16 seconds to secure the four-point victory.
Max Chaplin led the offensive attack for the Fightin' Engineers with 16 points off the bench, including shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the three point line. He also grabbed four rebounds.
Dillon Duff finished with 10 points in the effort, adding five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Wurtz grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds while adding 9 points and 3 assists.
Other performances include a combination of
Samvit Ram,
Bradley Harden,
Miles McGowen, and Kabrick each scoring four points. Harden finished with a team-high four assists.
The Fightin' Engineers as a team shot 44.9% from the field and MSJ finished with a 37.3% shooting percentage.
Devin Young finished with a double-double for the Lions, a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Evan Wiehe finished with 14 points.
Rose-Hulman returns to HCAC action on Wednesday, December 15 against Hanover College. Tipoff from Hulbert Arena is scheduled for 7:30pm.
Rose-Hulman improved to 6-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in HCAC play, while MSJ fell to 3-4 and 0-2 in the HCAC.
