HANOVER, Ind. -- Hanover College relied on a penalty kick goal in overtime to pick up a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a battle of previously unbeaten teams on Wednesday afternoon.
Rose-Hulman and Hanover both entered the game with perfect 5-0 records, and the first 90 minutes showed the skill of both teams to force extra time with a 1-1 tie.
Sarah Shoemaker put Rose-Hulman on the board in the 55th minute, scoring after an across the field pass from
Lane Lawrence. Hanover knotted the score at 1-1 on a goal by Maggie Day in the 68th minute.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw for the next 31 minutes of game time. Late in the first overtime, Hanover was awarded a penalty kick after a pass from the midfield into the box. Kelsey Hughes narrowly scored beyond the outstretched arms of goalkeeper
Natalie Dillon on the subsequent penalty kick to lift Hanover to the victory.
Dillon kept Rose-Hulman close throughout the match, recording a career-high 13 saves to lead the defense. The Fightin' Enginers recorded 12 shots on offense, led by three shots from Lawrence.
Hanover moved into the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference lead at 6-0, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 5-1. The Fightin' Engineers return to action at home on Saturday against Earlham College.
